GANDHARVA LOKA CELEBRATES ITS 20th ANNIVERSARY
On May 16th, 1989 our first World Music Store opened in Zurich. Since then, four more branches have grown up in Austria, and in 2008 the latest opened in Christchurch, New Zealand. In this period of 20 years much has happened in the realm of World Music: instruments from other cultures have become widely known and loved for their special sounds, enriching classical and traditional music. They are also widely used In therapy and education.
To celebrate the anniversary, Anne from the Zurich store organized a concert comprising 20 performances. More than 30 musicians participated — all friends and customers of Gandharva Loka. This concert took place on May 16th, 2009 in the Helferei Cultural Center, an appropriate location in the old city of Zurich.
A Sound-Journey at 4pm offered many interested visitors an intense sound experience, allowing them to experience these special instruments first-hand. At 5pm the musicians started a unique performance on musical instruments from all over the world: Native American Flute, Sitar, Gongs, Balafon, Erhu, Kotamo, Alphorn, Kora, Gu Zheng – to name only a few. Musicians as well listeners were so fascinated by themagic of sound that the concert became a music marathon that lasted till midnight. During the breaks new visitors joined and a delicious buffet offered culinary delight and new energy for everyone!
For many visitors the concert was a totally new musical experience, as they had ever seen or heard such instruments before. Some were absorbed in such a way that they totally forgot about the schedule of their trains or buses. Many of them later expressed their gratitude and joy, either personally or by phone to Anne whose weeklong efforts made the concert happen. They all received the music with great enthusiasm and joy.
To us as the Gandharva Loka team it is a wonderful reward and confirmation for all the years of personal effort. It is our heartfelt wish to offer and share the wealth of World Music with as many people as possible. We are happy when the fullness of extraordinary sounds can enrich your own life too.
Here we wish to thank all those whose contribution and help made the celebration a real success.

Hi, I really enjoyed my visit recently. Love my Aqua chime. Delighted to be able to tell you that St. Cecilia is the Patron Saint of musicians. Lovely shop.
